Coaching and Mentoring on Ruby on Rails
One on one, highly customized in person coaching on Ruby on Rails. 24 hours of training over 3 weeks

About Me

I have been working with Rails professionally for over 2 years. Check out my profile on working with Rails.

What is it like?

I will find the gap in your knowledge by asking you questions and customize the material according to your needs.  I will demo the concepts and watch you work on exercises to guide you along the way. I will build up gradually from what you know to more complicated concepts. I will act like a weight trainer, I can help you learn how to lift the weight properly but it is your responsibility to make the effort to lift the weight. So you must do the exercises assigned to you after each session. You have one week to complete them. Practice is key to making the concepts concrete and part of your finger tips.

What will be covered?

Learn from my 2 years of experience gained from work, training courses, conferences and screencasts. One of the difficulty about learning a framework is knowing what the framework provides and what the developer has to do to accomplish a certain task. I will include exercises that makes this very clear.

  • No boring lectures. Learn the typical work cycle of a Rails project. Learn how to make design decisions based on the requirements.
  • Basics of debugging, most commonly used Rake tasks, how to extract fixture data from your dev db, how to load data into db from fixtures etc.
  • You will gain lot of practical tips on Rails development that I learned over the past two years professionally.
  • Find out how to get through interviews for Rails jobs.

About Teaching Style

I follow Patrick Winston's teaching methodology:

1. Cycle (say the concept 3 times)
Repeating reduces the probability that the audience misses a certain point. It is a fact that people lose their attention and think about something else during the presentation.

2. Verbal Punctuation
Keep track of where you are by checking off the boxes on the outline.

3. Near miss
Two or more. Surround the concept with near misses that help to establish its boundaries and provides an effective way to zero-in on just what the concept is about.

4. Ask questions
Frequent easy questions. Wait for 5 seconds before demanding an answer.

If you see my screencasts you will notice that I deliberately do something that creates an error message and then I resolve that issue to show you how to go about fixing the problem. This is the concept of near miss. You learn more by making mistakes than not making any mistakes at all.

An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field.
         Niels Bohr - Danish physicist (1885 - 1962)

I also draw lots of diagrams when appropriate to visualize the concepts.

Structure

3 saturdays with each session consisting of 8 hours of intensive training. Ex:

Morning session: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
Lunch break : 45 mins
Afternoon session: 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm

You also have the option of splitting the session as 4 + 4 over a saturday and sunday.

30 Days - 100% Money Back Guarantee

By the end of three weeks you will be a productive Rails developer capable of working independently. Only condition is that you must do the exercises assigned after each session. It will be reviewed and concepts will be repeated so that you don't miss the important material required to succeed as a Rails developer. The last hour of the session will be review of all the material covered for that day, I will ask questions on all the important concepts covered and see if you really understood or not. I will repeat them if required.
